Implantable microfluidic system for Glaucoma therapy

Fraunhofer EMFT presents a demonstrator of a new implantable microfluidic system, which durably stabilizes intraocular pressure. It consists of a micropump system, a supervised pump control, a solid-state energy supply as well as a telemetry module for data transmission and can be implanted directly on the eyeball. The core element of the system is a very small, biocompatible silicon micro pump with dimensions of only 7x7x1 mm3 and a flow rate of up to 800 μl/min. Depending on the disease, it can moisturize the eye or drain intraocular fluid.
