EliGene® Influenza A/B/pandemic

Intended use
EliGene® Influenza A/B/Pandemic LC kit is intended for the detection of Influenza A and B RNA together with Pandemic variant A/H1N1.

Principle of the method
This diagnostic kit is based on Reverse Transcription-quantitative PCR method in one tube. In this kit primers and labeled probes (FAM, HEX and Cy5) for the detection of Influenza A, B, A/H1N1 RNA and for the detection of internal control are used.

Introduction
Influenza is an infectious disease of birds and mammals caused by RNA viruses of the family Orthomyxoviridae, the influenza viruses. The most common symptoms are chills, fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort. Approximately 33% of people with influenza are asymptomatic. Flu can occasionally lead to pneumonia, either direct viral pneumonia or secondary bacterial pneumonia, even for persons who are usually very healthy. Typically, influenza is transmitted through the air by coughs or sneezes, creating aerosols containing the virus. Influenza can also be transmitted by direct contact with bird droppings or nasal secretions, or through contact with contaminated surfaces. Influenza viruses can be inactivated by sunlight, disinfectants and detergents. Often, new influenza strains appear when an existing flu virus spreads to humans from another animal species, or when an existing human strain picks up new genes from a virus that usually infects birds or pigs. An avian strain named H5N1 raised the concern of a new Pandemic influenza after it emerged in Asia in the 1990s, but it has not evolved to a form that spreads easily between people. In April 2009 a novel flu strain evolved that combined genes from human, pig, and bird flu. Initially dubbed "swine flu" is also known as influenza A/H1N1. Influenza B almost exclusively infects humans and is less common than influenza A. This type of influenza mutates at a rate 2–3 times slower than type A.

EliGene® Legionella pneumophila

Principle of the method
This diagnostic kit is based on RealTime PCR method using Molecular Beacons hybridization probes. In this kit for the detection of Legionella pneumophila and internal control primers and Molecular Beacons labeled probes (FAM and HEX) are used.

Introduction
Legionella pneumophila is a thin, aerobic, gram-negative, non-encapsulated, aerobic bacillus of the genus Legionella containing more than 50 species. It is the best-characterized member of the genus and major causative agent of Legionnaires' disease, a severe form of acute pneumonia. L. pneumophila is an intracellular pathogen when the bacteria invades and replicates in alveolar macrophages and epithelial cells. Macrolides (azithromycin) or fluoroquinolones (moxifloxacin) are the standard treatment for L. pneumophila in humans. About 3 to 8% of all community-acquired pneumonias are caused by L. pneumophilla when the case-fatality rate for patients with legionellosis is between to 30% with elderly and immunocompromised patients at greater risk of death.

Principle of the method
This diagnostic kit is based on RealTime PCR method using Molecular Beacons hybridization probes. In this kit for the detection of Chlamydophila pneumoniae and internal control primers and Molecular Beacons labeled probes (FAM and HEX) are used.

Introduction
Chlamydophila pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular pathogen. It is a member of the Chlamydiae, a diverse range of obligate intracellular bacteria that includes parasites of amoebae, fish, reptiles, mammals, and humans. Today C. pneumoniae is associated with a remarkably wide range of chronic diseases as meningoencephalitis, arthritis or myocarditis and it is the second most often cause of community-acquired pneumonia. C. pneumoniae spreads by drop infection but in the form of infection elementary bodies (EB) resistant to environmental stresses, it can persist on the surfaces or be spreaded by the aerosol. During the life about 80% of population is infected byC. pneumoniae however in majority of cases the infection is asymptomatic. Some forms of pneumonia can be very serious but in these cases is not clear if C. pneumoniae is not only co-pathogen.

Principle of the method
This diagnostic kit is based on RealTime PCR method using Molecular Beacons hybridization probes. In this kit for the detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and internal control primers and Molecular Beacons labeled probes (FAM and HEX) are used.

Introduction
Mycoplasma pneumoniae belonging to class Mollicutes has one of the smallest known genomes. It lacks a peptidoglycan cell wall and thus it is resistant to the effects of penicillins and other beta-lactam antibiotics. In humans it causes atypical pneumonia. M. pneumoniae infects the upper and lower respiratory tracts, leading to upper respiratory tract infection, bronchiolitis, tracheobronchitis, bronchitis and community-acquired pneumonia. Infections of the lower respiratory tract generally manifest with a cough, sometimes with dyspnoea, adenopathy, wheezing and, rarely, with respiratory failure. Although M. pneumoniae infections are usually mild, and many are asymptomatic, they are not always self-limiting. M. pneumoniae causes up to 40% of cases of community-acquired pneumonia, but M. pneumoniae respiratory tract infections are also associated with a wide range of extra-pulmonary manifestations, including neurological, cardiac, dermatological, musculoskeletal, haematological and gastrointestinal symptoms.

Principle of the method

Introduction
Celiac disease, also called celiac sprue is one of the most common enteropathogenic disorders and is characterized by a lifelong hypersensitivity to gluten proteins found in wheat, rye, oat and barley. Celiac disease does not belong to allergic disease but it is characterized by intolerance to gliadin forming parts of gluten. In early childhood the immunological intolerance to gliadin, leads to a chronic inflammatory response in the small-intestinal mucosa and subsequent malabsorption characterized by chronic diarrhea, steatorrhea and failure to thrive. Many adult patients can also show other atypical signs such as, abdominal distention, weight loss, fatigue, skin- and joint problems or migraine-like headache. Indeed, others may remain largely asymptomatic. Non-treated celiac disease increases the risk of NHL (non-Hodgkin's lymphoma) and probably small-intestinal cancer.
Until recently, celiac disease was considered relatively uncommon with an estimated prevalence rate ranging from 1 in 1000 to 1:4000. However, the availability of new serologic tests have led to the observation that celiac disease is much more common, affecting about 1 of 100-400 persons in Europe, the majority of patients showing little clinical symptoms. Considerable evidence now indicates that celiac disease has a strong genetic component.
