Protective Shield Scalpel

Problem
Regardless of when scalpel injuries take place- they occur due to a sharp tip scalpel blade. Safety scalpels, currently available on the market, cannot prevent injuries during use or when exposed because these scalpels are loaded with a sharp tipped blade. Scalpel blades are more likely than needles to cause deep or otherwise severe injuries due to their sharp tips.

Solution
Round tip scalpel blades are recommended as a solution for reducing percutaneous injuries by the the CDC, AORN and EPINET of the University of Virginia's International Healthcare Worker Safety Center.

Facts
In a recent study nearly 69.8% of the scalpel injuries occurred during use.

Safety Scalpel Blades

Problem
Regardless of when scalpel injuries take place- they occur due to a sharp tip scalpel blade. Safety scalpels, currently available on the market, cannot prevent injuries during use or when exposed because these scalpels are loaded with a sharp-tipped blade.

Solution
The CDC, AORN and EPINET recommend round tip scalpel blades as a solution for preventing sharps injuries.

The SAFhandleTM safety scalpel blades have a round tip to prevent sharp injuries when the scalpel is in use or exposed.

Facts
Scalpel blades are more likely than needles to cause deep injuries due to their sharp tips.

Reusable Safety Scalpel

Matches the feel of conventional scalpels.
No change in technique.
‘No-touch’ blade removal.

Problem
There are usability problems that deter surgeons from accepting the sheathed or retractable scalpel designs. It’s a well known fact that surgeons prefer to use conventional reusable scalpel handles.

However, conventional reusable scalpel handles are unsafe because removal of blades is a difficult, hence risky procedure. Blades may sometimes break. Blade remover devices are expensive.

Solution
In recognition of this, AORN in its 2011 document ‘Sharps Safety in the OR-Lets Walk the Talk,’ AORN endorses, “Use next generation safety scalpel handles that will work with the any standard blade.”

The SAFhandleTM reusable metal safety scalpel has the exact shape, dimensions, weight, grip and balance of a conventional scalpel and does not require the surgeon to change their technique.

The SAFhandleTM reusable safety scalpel allows for ‘no-touch’ removal of blade, in compliance with OSHA and CDC requirements. It dispenses with the need for blade remover devices. The SAFhandleTM safety scalpel requires very little training to use (see video). The handle prevents the possibility of the blade breaking during procedure or disassembly.

The SAFhandleTM reusable safety scalpel, used in conjunction with work practice controls such as hands free transfer trays or neutral zones, offers the optimum balance between employee safety and the delivery of optimal healthcare to patients.

Facts
According to Outpatient Surgery Magazine’s online poll on the rate of conversion of currently available safety scalpels in healthcare facilities, “Out of 57 responses, nearly three- fourths reported futility in trying to convert their surgeons to safety scalpels: 25 percent can’t even get surgeons to trial them and another 44 percent say their surgeons tried, but didn’t like them.”

Retractable Blade Scalpel

Problem
Safety features of safety scalpels are frequently not activated and blade tips are left exposed, leading to injury during use, hand to hand passing or after use.

Solution
The SAFhandleTM retractable safety scalpels are fitted with SAFhandleTMround tip safety blades to ensure protection at all times.

Facts
Of the 1,700 recorded scalpel injuries, 19% occurred during safety device activation; 7% of those injuries occurred because the user improperly activated the safety device. In 27% of recorded injuries, the user did not activate the safety feature at all.

Disposable Safety Scalpel

Problem
According to most surgeons, the retractable shields and other safety mechanisms interfere with their view of the blade and make the devices a bad choice for a deep incision.

Solution
The SAFhandleTM disposable safety scalpels are fitted with the SAFhandleTMround tip safety blades to provide protection when scalpels are in use. The elimination of shields and buttons enables the SAFhandleTM disposable safety scalpel to be used where these mechanisms would obstruct the use of the scalpel.

Facts
Users seek a simple safety solution without active safety mechanisms.
