Micropump portfolio for all situations

High flow rates or extreme miniaturization – the extensive micropump portfolio of Fraunhofer EMFT allows for fulfilling the various requirements of the numerous applications in the area of medical technology. The silicon pumps, due to their miniaturized, flat design of down to 5 x 5 x 0.6 mm3) andhigh back- and suction pressure, are suitable for diabetes, tumor, hormone and pain treatment systems as well as implantable systems. The bigger but nonetheless cost-efficient micropumps made of stainless steel have their advantages in applications areas like infusions or negative pressure wound therapy systems. The piezo-driven micropumps are self-priming, bubble-tolerant and sterilizable. On the compamed trade fair Fraunhofer EMFT is presenting prototypes of its micropump portfolio in conjunction with potential application scenarios.

Reliable nanoliter-exact micro dosing

Nanoliter-exact dosing of gases and liquids with micropumps and micro dosing systems offers a wide potential in the area of medical technology. The exact dosing of minute quantities of liquids is of essential importance for numerous medical applications. At the same time, the dosing components have to be extremely reliable and cost-efficient.

On this year‘s Compamed trade fair Fraunhofer EMFT presents a novel micro dosing system for controlled dosing of minute quantities of liquid, enabling exact flow rates of 1 - 50 nl/s. One nanoliter of water corresponds to the volume of a cube with 0.1 mm sidelength. Two piezoelectrically driven micropumps with the chip size of 7 x 7 x 1 mm3 are the key components of the system. The extremely exact dosing is achieved by injecting defined gas bubbles into a dosing channel. Several sensors in this channel monitor the position and speed of the phase boundaries between gas and liquid, deducting the amount of liquid to be dosed. A micro controller is used for documenting the results as well as controlling the micropumps in order to set the desired flow rate.

The area of medical technology includes various application areas, such as drug delivery via external or implanted dosage systems. These can be deployed for example in pain therapy, hormone therapy, tumor therapy and in handling of diabetes. All of these application areas require exact dosage of minimal quantities. Additionally, the components of the dosage systems must be disposable and therefore producible at minimal cost. This is achieved by using materials such as plastics or metal.
