Historically, there has been a lack of reliable testing at the point of patient care. Acute care clinicians worldwide recognize the urgent need for laboratory standard POC testing to ensure the quality, reliability and accuracy of results.
The revolutionary Meritas® POC Analyzer, with its current and future menu of tests, sets a new standard for point-of-care testing. This allows fast, cost-effective and accurate triage, enabling rapid intervention for improved patient outcomes.
Analyzer Technology: The Meritas® POC Analyzer is a small highly sensitive optical instrument that uses a laser diode to detect fluorescence. The laser will induced the test specific fluorescent molecule to emitted light which will be detected in a way that the background noise is kept at a minimum. The intensity of the measured light will automatically be used to calculate a quantitative concentration for the biomarker of choice. The calculation of the concentration is done with the help of the built-in calibration curve for each assay. The platform is designed to give quantitative results for potentially any fluorescent immunoassay. The technology allows for one-step assay design which is just one reason why the handling of the analyzer is so simple. To also improve simplicity and security the analyzer has several built-in quality controls to verify that the Meritas POC Analyzer is working properly and that the assay has been correctly performed. The analyzer can be turned on 24 h and no regular maintenance is needed. In other words the Meritas® POC Analyzer is a highly sensitive system with the quality and simplicity necessary to deliver accurate results at all point of care and laboratory settings.
The Test Cartridge: The test cartridge is a lateral flow immunoassay that is intended to be used together with the Meritas® POC Analyzer. The foundation of the different Meritas cartridges is the plastic chip. The plastic chips are produced by injection molding which creates a defined structure of micro pillars on each chip. The micro pillar structure and pattern can be precisely modified depending on the different needs of different assays. The injection molding process is a highly controlled process that consistently produces plastic chips with the exact same characteristics from batch to batch. Whereas, inconsistency is normally a problem for similar POC assays that utilize nitrocellulose membranes as part of their assay cartridge which results in substantial batch to batch variation with those tests. Another important advantage with the micro pillar structure is that it creates an even and controllable flow of plasma over the chip surface. The controlled production of the plastic chips and their unique micro pillar design contribute to give the assays on the Meritas® POC Analyzer sensitivity and reproducibility superiority over other POC instruments and methods.
The chip has a sample receiving zone, a detection conjugate zone, a flow path with one or more reaction zones (with capture antibodies) and an integrated wicking zone. During an assay the Meritas® POC Analyzer checks that the specimen and reagent flow on the assay chip is functioning properly utilizing several preprogrammed timegates that have to be satisfactorily passed during an assay. Depending on which test is being run, the test time on a Meritas cartridge may vary between 5-15 minutes. Both plasma and whole blood can be used to perform a test. When whole blood is used the blood cells are automatically separated from the plasma in the separation membrane which is a part of the cartridge assay port. For convenience and quality reasons, all cartridges comes with a 2-D barcode including test specific data such as lot specific calibration curve, test type, expiry date and lot number.
The cartridge design together with the analyzer technology allows for highly sensitive assays with an advanced built-in control system.
