Development and prototyping of DNA/RNA diagnostic kits
The focus of our microelectronic research and development in the field of biomedicine includes the development and production of miniaturised electronic DNA/RNA diagnostic kits. We offer biocompatible electronic sensorchip solutions with packaging tailored to the needs of the customers which may include polymer substrate as well. Our microelectronic systems enable the fast real-time detection of pathogens as well as the long-term monitoring of physiological parameters using only one energy efficient and portable device.
We offer integrated and multiphysical sensors as well as sensor networks enabling the low noise and low power acquisition of signals of biological origin. The integration of biosensors including for instance electrical, optical and biochemical operation principles on the same silicon chip allows synchronised real-time measurements. Due to the high resolution of sensor array structures it is furthermore possible to record the effects of several pathogens and bioanalytical environmental parameters at the same time.
As a strategic partner IMMS offers application-orientated preliminary research and development services for small and medium-sized industrial enterprises in the fields of microelectronics, mechatronics and system design. In the interdisciplinary field between microelectronics and life sciences we are specialised on the development of application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs) and electronic sensor components.
We offer customer-specific microsystems and sensor solutions for diagnostics, therapy and research also involving retinal and neuronal tissues and bioanalytics. Due to diverse applications and multi-physical effects in biology, biotechnology, chemistry and medicine we integrate our systems into customer’s devices such as microfluidic pumps and channels as well as individual optical sensor components.
We conduct both product developments and proof-of-concept studies in cooperation with our industrial and research partner companies.

Currently, there are 90 staff members working at our Institute, which was founded in 1995 as an associated research institute of the Ilmenau University of Technology (Thuringia, Germany). It has a section in Erfurt and its headquarters in Ilmenau.
