“Our vision is it that hydrocephalus patients supervise their brain pressure at home“, says Matthias Wenzel, project manager Biomedical MEMS of Campus Micro Technologies GmbH (CMT). At the COMPAMED from November 15 to 17, CMT presents a brain pressure implant which controls the therapy of the brain disease for the first time under everyday life conditions: The patient is not bound to the sickbed but can move without restrictions. During the suppliers’ fair COMPAMED within the MEDICA, CMT and other enterprises present medical novelties at the Product Market High-tech for Medical Devices. The joint pavilion is organized by IVAM Microtechnology Network.
“The brain pressure implant is an alternative to pressure measuring catheters in clinical treatment“, states Matthias Wenzel from CMT. “An external unit sends the brain pressure data continuously to a clinical monitoring system. Since there are no cables, the patient is completely separate from the monitor and can move freely“, confirms Wenzel. If the clinical tests under everyday life conditions work, patients could be treated at home quite soon – a ray of hope especially for infants who suffer from hydrocephalus.
If the brain liquid does not circulate correctly, this can lead to hydrocephalus. For therapy, drainage systems are implanted, which drain surplus liquid. Due to frequent dysfunctions, the process must be supervised stationary. With the new gauge from CMT the brain pressure data is transferred wirelessly to a unit carried on the body. The scalp is closed after the implantation, which prevents infections.
The exhibitors of the IVAM joint pavilion High-tech for Medical Devices can expect visitors from all over the world at COMPAMED, which is embedded in the medical trade fair Medica. Companies and institutes that would like to exhibit with IVAM or take part in the forum can contact Katrin Manka (email@example.com; Tel.: +49 231 9742 7081). More information and the exhibitor list can be found at www.ivam.de > Trade Shows / Dates.
IVAM, the microtechnology network, is an international association of companies and institutes in the field of microtechnology. At present 178 companies and institutes from twelve countries in Europe, Asia and the USA are IVAM members.
As the communicative bridge between suppliers and users of microtechnology products and services, IVAM brings innovations to market and creates competitive advantages via technology marketing. Furthermore, IVAM offers lobbying services for small and medium-sized enterprises, qualification and world-wide networking.
