Worldwide, it has become an issue for companies marketing multiparameter patient monitors: due to the specialisation of several manufacturers in one parameter, it becomes more and more difficult to measure all necessary parameters by using your company's own technology. Also, relatively low quantities in a cost sensitive application area often do not justify the development of an in-house solution.

Medlab introduces the NIBScan, a new module for non invasive measurement of the blood pressure, that can be used in professional monitoring applications in hospitals and in intensive care.

The NIBScan is clinically validated and complies with all current international standards. The mandatory security circuit for patient safety is fully integrated. Thereby, it is guaranteed that, also in first failure, under no circumstances the inflated cuff will cut off the patient's blood flow for an extended period.

Daniel Hendreich of Medlab GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany, sees a market mainly in cost sensitive applications: "The totally new concept of the pneumatic circuit and the construction of our own, very robust and cost effective valves enable us to offer the module at a very attractive price".

The innovative construction does not use tubing for connection of the pneumatical parts, but instead, these components are mounted on a special, injection-moulded part that transports the air from the cuff to the valves and also integrates the pump and the pressure sensors.

"This new manufacturing principle reduces the production steps, because the normally used tubing connections can only be made manually", explains Mr. Hendreich.

The NIBScan uses the oscillometric method and contains a 32-Bit microcontroller that guarantees a reliable and correct blood pressure measurement, also in difficult situations. Communication with the host system takes place over a serial- or a CAN bus interface.

As an additional benefit, differently sized cuffs that are optimized to work with the module are available. They not only have a very comfortable fit, but are latex free and reach a high life time, due to their polyurethane coating.
