Unitechnologies is pleased to announce the commercial launch of a cross-border technology, marketed under the brand sylas®.

With the new 3D laser polishing machine, Unitechnologies offers a new development which excels due to its extraordinary construction and the innovative process structure. New possibilities are created for Unitechnologies' customers, be it the choice of an advanced surface processing system, an increase in productivity or a decrease of polishing costs.

The new 3D polishing machine consists, amongst others, of an extremely rigid and precise 5 axis DELTA robot and a 3D laser scanner.The surfaces to be processed are calculated based on CAD data and are handled by the machine software. The work instructions for the robot and the scanner are generated from this data. The system recognizes the relevant geometrical references of the component to be polished using a camera. Based on this, the effective position of the component is calculated and the polishing process is started.

The chosen surfaces are scanned with a pulsed high frequency laser. The material melts locally with the passing of the laser and resolidifies subsequently. The surface tension smoothens the material and as a result eliminates unevenness.

Faster On average, the laser polishing process is 10x faster than all conventional mechanical polishing processes, regardless of whether these are automated or manual.

Particle free The laser polishing process does not remove any material and, as a result, can be used in clean rooms.

Selective Due to the positioning precision, as well as the 8 degrees of freedom of the system, only the selected surfaces can be processed. At the same time, the edges of the component to be processed remain untouched during the polishing process.

Micro-scratch free Micro-scratches in the material are avoided during the laser polishing process, which makes it especially suitable for medical applications.
