Depending on the area of application, medical products have to meet demanding criteria, for example in terms of biocompatibility and durability. The material therefore plays a key role in product development. But new manufacturing processes are also a driver of innovation. At COMPAMED 2022 one could experience many innovations on the subject of materials and their processing.

Thermal energy shrinks printed objects

Unlike 3D printing, 4D production features the added dimension of time. The technology uses shape memory polymers to print objects that can change their shape once at a later point in time. All it takes is their exposure to heat.

"You can use all structures to create all kinds of implant geometries"

Using 3D lithography via two-photon polymerisation of biodegradable copolymers, 3D scaffolds with substructures on a micrometre scale were produced for the first time. The process will open up new possibilities in the therapy of cartilage-bone defects.
