At the same time, development costs and production costs are often significantly higher than for conventional components. Microtechnology pays off wherever high quantities, sophisticated functionality or the positive effects of miniaturization for therapy predominate, for example in portable diagnostic devices or implantable systems.

Key technologies include MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) and NEMS (nanoelectromechanical systems) components, piezoresistive pressure sensors, capacitive accelerometers and electrochemical biosensors. In medical technology, they are used in infusion pumps, for example, where they provide precise flow and pressure measurements in real time. A second example is implantable glucose sensors, which continuously monitor blood sugar levels and transmit them to insulin pumps or mobile devices.
