Supply chain: three risks for MedTech suppliers in 2026

In 2026, supply chains in the medical technology supplier industry face a stress test. The industry faces three challenges in particular: new regulatory deadlines, geopolitical tensions, and the concentration of critical raw materials in a small number of countries of origin. Especially for EU countries, these problems are converging into a risk to companies' own production capacities and to the trust of customers and partner organizations.

As of May 28, 2026, several modules of the EUDAMED (European Database on Medical Devices) became mandatory. Suppliers must now provide documented approvals, complete traceability, monitoring of test equipment, process validation, and clear change notification and escalation procedures. This significantly raises the requirements for data quality and supplier management.

This is fundamentally changing the perspective on supply chains: cost optimization alone is no longer enough. What is needed are regional, transparent, and resilient structures, because under the MDR and IVDR, manufacturers remain responsible for all outsourced processes (German website) and must demonstrate their traceability without gaps.

Medical technology relies on high-grade metals, alloys, and plastics, and here Germany and the EU are heavily dependent on imports from a small number of hard-to-replace sources. A study by the Hans Böckler Foundation (German website) highlights semiconductors as intermediate products and specific dependencies on metals such as titanium as particularly critical.

The EU is also dependent on biomedical precursor products from the United States as well as on critical raw materials from China: more than 90 percent of certain EU imports of rare earth elements and intermediate products such as magnesium come from Chinese production. Dependencies are considered critical (PDF file, German website) when substitution is barely possible and procurement is concentrated among a small number of countries of origin.

How quickly such dependencies can translate into concrete disruptions was demonstrated by the conflict in the Gulf region. Destabilized transport routes, rising energy prices, and scarcer petrochemical feedstocks are directly affecting energy-intensive processes (German website) in MedTech manufacturing, for example in plastic components and sterile single-use products. For suppliers, this translates into delivery delays, contractual penalties from OEMs, and in the worst case, jeopardized patient care.

In 2026, regulatory pressure, geopolitical uncertainty, and upcoming investment decisions are converging. Supply chain security can therefore no longer be treated as a procurement issue alone. It becomes a management responsibility that executive leadership and supply chain teams must own together.
