LaborView™ Sensor System

Current electronic maternal-fetal monitoring devices use outdated sensors (a toco [strain gauge]) for contractions and Doppler-based ultrasound to pick up the fetal heart rate). These sensors are frequently inaccurate (with studies showing a failure rate up to 35%) and notorious for requiring frequent adjustments by the nurses. They don’t work well, if at all, with obese moms. Tight Velcro belts holding them on are uncomfortable, especially for obese moms. They also tether mom to the monitors,reducing mobility, and further increasing the nurse’s workload. The “gold standard” alternatives – the intra-uterine pressure catheter (IUPC) and fetal scalp electrode screwed into thebaby’s scalp (FSE) – require adequate cervical dilation and ruptured membranes, increase costs,and risk infections.

OBMedical®’s LaborView™ sensor system is a wireless electrode-based system designed for labor and delivery departments. LaborView™ is an advanced maternal fetal sensor that externally measures labor contractions and the heart rates of the mother and child. The innovative technology offers superior signal capture and digital signal processing that is simple to set up, provides safe, continuous and reliable monitoring, and allows the mother mobility during labor.

The system has four components. The first component is a disposable electrode array that is comfortable and easy to apply by the caregiver
♥ Non-invasive, easy to apply, and more comfortable (particularly relative to the tight Velcro bands required to keep the toco and ultrasound in place and working properly)
♥ Much improved contraction waveforms, particularly in difficult-to-monitor obese patients because electrical signals propagate better through adipose tissue than pressure signals (mean positive percent agreement of approximately 90% of all contractions compared to approximately 70% for standard toco strain gauge when measured against an IUPC) in our clinical trials
♥ Much improved fetal heart rate monitoring, since the device need not be constantly readjusted to acquire or maintain the FHR (preliminary data indicate a mean positive percent agreement of 85% compared to 63% for ultrasound when measured against a fetal scalp electrode)
♥ LaborView stays in place during epidural placement
♥ Maternal heart rate monitoring and successful separation of FHR and MH
♥ Exceptional UA data capture, may allow you to delay or avoid IUPC

OBMedical is proud to announce the launch of our LaborView™ System in the US.   The LaborView™ System is a major advancement in external fetal monitoring using a wireless electrode array that captures maternal and fetal heart rate plus contraction data during labor for all BMI classifications. Placed once on the maternal abdomen, the system is light and easy-to-wear while walking, moving or turning. It is compatible with legacy electronic fetal monitors, and L&D nurses will appreciate the lack of repositioning and ease of application.   The LaborView system is FDA cleared for sale in the United States and is manufactured in the US.   LaborView is expected to be available outside the US in 2017.

Founded in 2012 by a team led by  Weaver Gaines and Neil Euliano, Ph.D., our technology is a result of over a decade of biomedical research using neural networks, signal processing, information theory, data fusion, artificial intelligence at CE Engineering and  the University of Florida coupled with the clinical experience of the OB-GYN Department at the University of Florida College of Medicine.
