New powerful open-frame product line „HERC“

German power supply specialist FRIWO is revolutionizing its existing open-frame product portfolio by adding the new product line „HERC“, the product name standing for "High Efficiency and Rapid Customization". It features two essential characteristics of the compact built-in components: very high efficiency (high efficiency and low standby losses) meets an easy-to-adapt open design for fast customer-specific modifications. The first lines of the new product series include output voltages of 5 - 48 VDC for power classes of 18 W, 30 W and 175 W.

As to open-frame PS dimensions, standard measures of 3 "x2"; 4 "x2" and 5 "x3" for the different power classes have become well-established, and are also met by the HERC series. The very compact design includes, in addition to length and width, the height, which is only 1 "- 1.3" for the HERC line.

With up to 94 % efficiency, the power supplies belong to the top tier. FRIWO also sets new standards for idle power consumption: the DOE VI requirements for external power supplies are exceeded, which is quite unusual for open-frame power supplies. The units can be operated in an ambient temperature range from - 25° C to 70° C. A dual power concept allows the unit to be used both as a convection-cooled and a fan-cooled power supply.

The HERC line meets the medical requirements of IEC60601-1 and can be used worldwide at heights of up to 5000 m. With the protection 2 x MOPP/MOOP, the insulation of the units is designed for both patient and user safety. The minimum leakage current of < 100 μA (for individual product lines even < 10 μA) allows manufacturers to design medical devices with a patient interface, an applied part of class BF or CF.

In compliance with the new Hazard Base Standard IEC 62368-1, the HERC units also come highly recommended for use in the industry, information technology and audio/video.

In terms of EMC, the new HERC series meets the 4th edition of the IEC 60601-1-2 standard for medical devices, both for professional and domestic use. Furthermore, the requirements for a device of protection class II without functional earth are met, which in turn allows the devices to be used also in domestic areas according to IEC 60601-1-11. With regard to the permissible limit values for harmonic currents of IEC 61000-3-2, units of power ratings  > 75 W are equipped with an active PFC.

Further power ratings of the new product line (120 W, 225 W, 350 W, 450 W) are still being engineered and will be launched shortly.

Medically approved 65 W open-frame power supplies

With the new OF65 line FRIWO offers highly efficient open-frame switch mode power supplies in standard industrial format of 4 x 2 x 1 inches. The OF65 units feature a wide range input of 90 - 264 VAC and are available with output voltages of 12 VDC, 15 VDC, 24 VDC and 48 VDC. These products are designed for use in a wide ambient temperature range of -25°C to +65°C. The specified power of 65 W is achieved by pure convection cooling, a fan is not required. The units come with two fuses in the input circuit, have a reinforced insulation and may therefore be used for both protection class I and II applications.

The power supplies are suppressed according to the current medical EMC standard IEC60601-1-2 in its fourth edition, and are approved and certified in accordance with IEC60601-1. They also meet the requirements of protection class 2 x MOPP and have a minimum leakage current of ≤ 100 µA which ensures optimum patient safety.

FRIWO is also pleased to announce that switch mode power supplies were approved and certified in accordance with IT standards IEC/EN60950-1, UL 60950-1, CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60950-1-07. Consequently, these units can also be safely used in IT applications, both in Europe and the United States of America.

Battery solutions for medical applications and measuring technology: standard packs in accordance with IEC 62133

In addition to the UN38.3 approval, which is required for battery transport, selected battery solutions of the FRIWO standard portfolio have now also been approved in accordance with safety standard IEC 62133.  This standard imposes high demands and tests in terms of safe operating of gas-tight batteries. Among other things, vibration and shock tests are conducted with a peak acceleration of 150 gn.

Particularly battery packs for medical applications have to meet special requirements. A stable power supply for mobile and stationary applications must always be ensured, even under difficult conditions. Life-saving and life-sustaining devices such as defibrillators and respirators, for example, increasingly focus on lithium-ion technology with reliable battery solutions. As a consequence, specific standards and regulations like EN 60601-1 (medical electrical equipment) apply. EN 60601-1 specifies that rechargeable lithium batteries for medical applications have to comply with the regulations of IEC 62133.

In addition to medical applications there are other areas of use requiring product safety of battery packs according to IEC 62133, for instance, measurement or control technology applications.

The new approval IEC 62133 generates a real added value for FRIWO's customers since no high registration costs for the standard packs 251P, 351P, 352P, 551P, 552P and 752P incur. The certification enhances the flexibility and attractiveness of the FRIWO standard battery solutions.

FRIWO presents new power supply line „FOX“

Absolutely safe and highly efficient for industrial and medical technology.

FRIWO's FOX line (FRIWO one click x-change) offers highly efficient power supplies for challenging environments. The units meet the most stringent energy effiency standards such as DOE Level VI or Code of Conduct (CoC), even for medical technology. In addition to the units' high efficiency, the minimum standby losses are crucial. Maximum safety is guaranteed by double locking of the housings, minimum leakage currents of ≤ 10 µA and protection class 2x MOPP.

Thanks to interchangeable adapters and a wide range input of 90 to 264 VAC, the units can be used worldwide. Highlighted is also an optional adapter with IP 42 protection for the FOX products. In practical terms, this means that the units can be damp wiped and cleaned - an invaluable advantage in sterile environments.

Since the units are optionally available with white housings, the FOX line perfectly fits in medical applications or cleanrooms.

The individual units of the FOX line provide power ratings of 7.5 W (FOX6), 12 W (FOX12), 18 W (FOX18) and 30 W (FOX30) and cover voltages of 5 to 48 VDC in the standard portfolio. The product line also includes solutions with USB output, also available with medical approval according to IEC 60601-1, as well as variants with fixed bottom for country-specific use.
