HIGH PERFORMANCE MEDICAL TUBING

MicroLumen provides tubing with exceptional mechanical, thermal and chemical properties for use in a wide range of minimally invasive, critical OEM applications such as cardiovascular catheters, stent delivery systems, urological retrieval devices and drug delivery.

Our innovative manufacturing process allows us to deliver significantly tighter tolerances than conventionally extruded tubing.  We offer Polyimide, PTFE, Nylon, Pebax®, Polyurethane, and various polymer products. Our secondary operations, including custom laser machining, etching, composite constructions, assembly, and braid/coil reinforced shafts enable us to develop customized solutions for your exact requirements.

Polyimide
Polyimide is a thermoset plastic that has exceptional thermal stability, chemical resistance, and tensile strength. Our polyimide tubing is manufactured with tighter tolerances than conventionally extruded plastic tubing.

Reinforced
Choose braid reinforced tubing for applications that require increased column strength, torque transmission and increased burst strength.

PTFE / Composite
Our unique process of incorporating fluoropolymers with Polyimide provides mechanical properties far superior to conventionally extruded medical tubing.

Laser Machined
If you have a customized application with exacting requirements, we offer secondary laser machining processes to accomplish specific tasks, such as precision holes for drug deliver or reduced OD to bond.

PTFE TUBING

PTFE Liners
  • Our PTFE tubing expands the capability of our medical tubing, allowing us to combine physical properties of multiple materials into one high-performance product. PTFE has one of the lowest coefficients of friction against any solid.
  • Our liners are typically built with a wall thickness = 0.0005" to 0.001".
  • We can supply tubing with the PTFE liner or provide an etched OD PTFE on a mandrel for catheter building at your facility.
  • ETO sterilization is required with PTFE liners.

PTFE Composites
  • Our unique process of incorporating fluoropolymers with Polyimide provides excellent mechanical properties while reducing the coefficient of friction.
  • PTFE Composite Tubing can withstand gamma and e-beam sterilization.
  • PTFE Composite can be applied to the ID and/or OD.

  • Both PTFE composites and ultra-thin PTFE liners reduce the coefficient of friction: Coefficient of friction

REINFORCED TUBING

MicroLumen offers custom braid and coil reinforced tubing. Primary advantages of using reinforced tubing include increased column strength, torque transmission and increased burst strength. Reinforced tubes are available in a wide range of diameters and configurations. The construction of a typical reinforced tube consists of a substrate layer, a braided or coiled layer, and an exterior layer. Substrates can include Polyimide, PTFE liners and many thermoplastics like Pebax or Nylon. PTFE liners on the ID of the tube offer reduced surface friction and various materials, like Polyimide, Pebax, Nylon and Urethanes, can be applied to the OD for varying durometer and color.

Reinforced Tubing Specifications
  • The most common braid/coil material is 304V stainless steel.
  • Both round and flat wires are available. Common wire sizes:
  1. Round wire 0.0010" to 0.004"
  2. Flat wire 0.0005" x 0.0025" and larger
  • "PIC" count = per inch crosses (Braid)
  • "WPI" count = wraps per inch (Coil)
  • Higher PIC counts improve flexibility, while a lower PIC count increases longitudinal stiffness
  • The PIC count can be varied within a specific length to provide variable flexibility. This can also be achieved via selective laser removal of OD layers or variable durometer reflows.
  • Selective laser removal of Polyimide top-layers increases flexibility and helps in secondary processes & assembly
  • Axial reinforcement provides added tensile strength and minimized elongation
