Connectors and Feedthroughs for Medical Applications

In medical technology the dependability of all components is a crucial factor. Sensitive electronic components require reliable encapsulation that can withstand difficult environmental conditions on a long-term basis.

Building on more than 70 years of experience in manufacturing hermetically-sealed housings and feedthroughs, SCHOTT Electronic Packaging offers custom-made, autoclavable connectors for medical equipment that are manufactured with purely inorganic and therefore non-aging materials with glass or ceramic as the insulator.

The use of proven Glass-to-Metal-Sealing or Ceramic-to-Metal Sealing technologies can consistently prevent the permeation of moisture or gases which could cause internal corrosion, degradation of the electronic components and even malfunction of the equipment. Our tightly sealed connectors are thus highly temperature and shock resistant and can reliably withstand the typical steam sterilization conditions in autoclaves. At the same time they provide continuous power supply, or transmission of data from the components.

All of our autoclavable medical connectors and feedthroughs are custom made and can be entirely modified to suit your specific application.

Autoclavable SCHOTT Solidur® LEDs for Medical and Dental Devices

Sterilizable LEDs for extreme conditions
LEDs have become indispensable in high-tech applications, for instance in medical technology or dentistry. Here, very high requirements are placed on lighting products: size, light properties, temperature management, usability and sterilizability are of major importance.

Hermetic and autoclavable
Precisely for these applications, SCHOTT has developed fully hermetic Solidur® LED modules. Besides gas- and watertightness, thoroughly selected materials provide excellent temperature management properties, as well as a high lifetime. Thus, the LEDs can reliably withstand extremely harsh operating environments, e.g. typical sterilization conditions in autoclaves.

Customizable designs
Thanks to SCHOTT’s know how in the development of customized housings, caps and lenses, Solidur®LEDs can be designed to meet your individual requirements. Furthermore, customers can select from three basic LED types:

- Solidur Mini LED: The world’s smallest autoclavable HB (high brightness) LED
- Solidur Ring LED: The first autoclavable ring-shaped HB LED
- Solidur TO LED: Autoclavable all-rounder that can be easily integrated into existing systems

Sensor Housings for Medical Applications

Superior quality housings for use in medical applications are yet another area of core competence at SCHOTT Electronic Packaging. As medical devices often come into direct contact with the human body, they are not allowed to contain any materials that could be harmful to one’s health and are subject to strict requirements with respect to purity and durability. Biocompatibility is therefore a key requirement that medical sensor packaging must meet. Sensors, used in medical applications, also require reliable encapsulation that can withstand difficult environmental conditions on a long-term basis. In order to kill off bacteria, the devices are often treated with hot steam under high pressure at temperatures of over 130°C. This clearly puts an immense strain on the sensitive electronic components.

Hermetic housings made of glass and metal, ceramic and metal, as well as full ceramic housings, offer reliable protection, but also ensure a continuous power supply, as well as transmission of the information from the components. Optical elements like windows can also be integrated in such packages. Unlike conventional housings, the materials that SCHOTT Electronic Packaging uses provide complete hermetic protection. The sealing technology helps to prevent moisture from penetrating into the inside of the housing and causing internal corrosion. In addition to being autoclavable, our sensor packages are also temperature and shock resistant. SCHOTT HermeS® Hermetic Through Glass Vias (TGV)

SCHOTT HermeS® is a glass substrate with hermetically sealed solid “Through Glass Vias” (TGV). It enables fully gastight and therefore long-term robust enclosures for MEMS devices. The fine-pitched vias allow the reliable conduction of electrical signals and power into and out of the MEMS device. Since HermeS® can be placed directly under the silicon MEMS, it makes miniaturized, fully hermetic 3D Wafer Level Chip Size Packaging (WLCSP) possible.

The Electronic Packaging Business Unit
The Electronic Packaging Business grew from the development of electronic glass applications. As early as the 1930s, these glasses were developed for the hermetic sealing of glass and metal. Today, our product line ranges from passivation glasses for semiconductors to special glasses for glass-to-metal and ceramic-to-metal seals and even non-electronic applications, such as dental glass. Products and processes that are particularly important for packaging in the fields of electronics, opto-electronics, and sensors have also been developed by SCHOTT Electronic Packaging.
