Battery Pack 10S3P
FRIWO offers battery solutions with communication interfaces in its standard product range: Built-in SMbus interfaces for data transfer allow for example to indicate the remaining battery runtime or the maximum available capacity. For this purpose, all limit values can be adjusted in an optimal way to the cells used. This is of great importance, especially for safety-related or medical applications.
The SMbus is based on the widely spread I²C bus protocol which is used for communication between separate functional units. The bit rate of this 2-wire bus can be up to 100Kbit/s. To achieve this, FRIWO uses premium components from Texas Instruments. These can be implemented in a very space-saving way on the battery management system (BMS): there are semiconductor ICs available, consisting of protective circuit ICs with integrated SMbus interface. Also the combination of analogue-front-end (AFE) for analysis of battery parameters and separate communication IC provide for a safe and exact data communication matching perfectly with the Samsung battery cells.
Within the FRIWO standard portfolio, modern battery management systems let battery packs of medium and big size configurations (4S1P to 10S3P) become intelligent and adaptable.

Battery solutions for medical applications and measuring technology: standard packs in accordance with IEC 62133
In addition to the UN38.3 approval, which is required for battery transport, selected battery solutions of the FRIWO standard portfolio have now also been approved in accordance with safety standard IEC 62133. This standard imposes high demands and tests in terms of safe operating of gas-tight batteries. Among other things, vibration and shock tests are conducted with a peak acceleration of 150 gn.
Particularly battery packs for medical applications have to meet special requirements. A stable power supply for mobile and stationary applications must always be ensured, even under difficult conditions. Life-saving and life-sustaining devices such as defibrillators and respirators, for example, increasingly focus on lithium-ion technology with reliable battery solutions. As a consequence, specific standards and regulations like EN 60601-1 (medical electrical equipment) apply. EN 60601-1 specifies that rechargeable lithium batteries for medical applications have to comply with the regulations of IEC 62133.
In addition to medical applications there are other areas of use requiring product safety of battery packs according to IEC 62133, for instance, measurement or control technology applications.

Waterproof and dustproof LED driver with slim housing
For LED lighting in demanding environments FRIWO offers a new driver line in a partially potted extruded profile housing. Thanks to special end caps, the drivers of the "LT WP" line meet the requirements of protection class IP67 against the ingress of foreign bodies and water.
The new driver line currently offers devices with power ratings of 20 W, 40 W and 60 W and is suitable both for operation in constant current mode (CC) and for applications with constant voltage operation (CV).
In addition to the IP67 protection, a significant added value is rendered by the small cross-section of the devices, which can be used even in narrowest profiles thanks to a height of 21 mm and a width of 30 mm. Depending on the performance class, the length of the units is 185 mm (LT20 WP), 210 mm (LT40 WP) or 260 mm (LT60 WP).
The drivers are approved in accordance with safety standards EN61347-1 and EN61347-2-13. With regard to the EMC guidelines, the requirements according to EN55015; EN61000-3-2; EN61547 and EN62384 are met.

PVC-free leads – beneficial to the environment and health
For a leading toy manufacturer FRIWO has engineered a power supply with a PVC-free lead. PVC, which is often used for the coating of leads, is potentially harmful to health and environment: to prevent the plastic from becoming brittle, so-called phthalates are used as softeners. Phthalates, however, can endanger both liver and kidney and are also suspected of being carcinogenic. The toxics can enter the body through saliva as well as through the respiratory tract or simple skin contact, which is why there are stringent limits, especially for use in children's products.
During production and disposal, environmental pollution and health problems also occur. The starting material for PVC is vinyl chloride, which is carcinogenic and can affect the genetic material. PVC is a very stable chemical compound that does not rot and releases many highly toxic substances in case of fire.
PVC is not only dangerous for humans, it also affects wildlife. Above all, dogs and rodents find PVC to be tasty. The consequences are health problems for animals as well as browsing damage to cables, resulting in power outages and fires.

FRIWO now successfully certified according to DIN EN ISO 13485
An additional quality promise to medical technology: After FRIWO has successfully passed the auditing by TÜV Nord in December 2017, the German manufacturer of power supplies has received the official certification according to DIN EN ISO 13485:2012. Backed by this independent authority’s certification, FRIWO’s customers can rely upon that quality management system and development processes within the company do comply with the high regulatory requirements.
“With the certification according to ISO 13485, our teams have reached another milestone we are extremely proud of. By this demanding certification we prove to be a reliable partner for medical technology industry and we strengthen our customers’ confidence in our performance and efficiency”, states Rolf Schwirz, Managing Director for FRIWO, with satisfaction.
DIN EN ISO 13485 defines regulatory requirements for a comprehensive management system of medical product manufacturers. As an internationally accepted standard, this regulation contains guidelines concerning construction and development, production, installation, maintenance, and distribution. This certification imposes high levels for the exact adherence to all process steps. Special attention is paid to consequent and complete documentation and risk management; not only concerning minimization of risks, but also an optimal traceability of products and components.

German power supply specialist FRIWO extends its product portfolio: in addition to power supplies, chargers and battery packs, production services for inductive components are offered. From now on, our in-house transformer and choke production in Vietnam will no longer manufacture for FRIWO‘s own power supplies and chargers but also for customers.
Customers can benefit from the attractive combination of a lean Asian organization under high quality standards and German management: FRIWO acquired the transformer and choke production from a supplier in 2016 and has completely modernized the production halls. Today the facility counts 19 assembly lines where 750 employees are manufacturing various inductive components. The personnel are highly experienced: virtually all of the personnel joined FRIWO from their previous employer. The Vietnamese facility combines the best of two worlds: European expertise in flexible production processes and Asia's attractive manufacturing conditions.
From now on, FRIWO does not only produce components for its own demand but also offers production services according to customer’s drawings and documents for components like:
- Switchmode Transformers
- Power Transformers, potted and unpotted
- Coils
- Chokes
- Current Sense Transformers
- Wireless / Inductive Charging Coils
