Soleris® System and Vials

Soleris® System for Rapid Microbial Detection

The Soleris system is a rapid optical system for the detection of microbial contamination based on an innovative application of classic microbiology. The optical assay measures microbial growth by monitoring pH and other biochemical reactions that generate a colour change, as microorganisms in the broth grow and metabolise nutrients. The results are monitored by the system providing an alert for samples that are out of specification.

Sensitivity ranges from a single organism per vial to 108 cfu/mL (upper limit).

The Soleris technology

The Soleris technology monitors changes in the chemical characteristics of microbial liquid growth medium and detects microorganisms with pH and other sensitive reagents. The reagents change their spectral patterns as the metabolic process takes place. These changes are detected photometrically by an optical instrument and monitored at predetermined time intervals.

The key to the technology is the monitoring of these changes in a semifluid zone of the patented organism-specific vial (see right). This zone is separated from the liquid medium, thereby eliminating the masking of the optical pathway by the product, or microbial turbidity. Changes in colour, expressed as optical units, are sensed by the optical sensor and recorded in the computer. Sample volumes of up to 5 mL can be used. Various dyes, which are indicators of metabolic activity (e.g., pH, redox, CO2 production and enzymatic activity), can be utilised in the system.

Because of its design, the system can be utilised in conjunction with swabs, sponges and filters to assess the levels of various groups of organisms as a critical control point on equipment, floors, and the environment. Soleris’ advantage over ATP is that it measures presence of specific groups of bacteria, indicating problems in a rapid manner.

Mycotoxins are a group of naturally occurring toxins produced by moulds or fungi in grain while in the field or during storage. Typically triggered by weather extremes, these toxins can impair human health and cause economic losses in livestock. One mycotoxin, aflatoxin, is considered the most potent carcinogen and is strictly regulated by the FDA and EU legislative limits.

Neogen® offers the most comprehensive range of mycotoxin test kits to detect aflatoxin, as well as aflatoxin M1, deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisin, ochratoxin, T-2/HT-2, and zearalenone. Our tests are available in various formats, provide results in minutes and only require a minimal amount of training and equipment. In addition, Neogen’s MAX ranges use aqueous extraction to eliminate the need for harsh chemicals in your processes

Monitoring for the presence and prevalence of mycotoxins is typically conducted at the point of grain receipt, during storage and prior to shipment. A strong screening programme at the point of receipt can help the manager determine whether to accept the cargo, decline it or route it to a certain production type depending on mycotoxin levels.

Neogen's testing solutions for mycotoxins include:

Lateral Flow Tests
Reveal Q+ MAX and Reveal Q+ are easy-to-use, quantitative lateral flow test kits that screen samples against set thresholds. For qualitative results, Neogen offers Reveal and Reveal MAX. Through the use of the Raptor reader, the tests provide accurate sample results.

ELISA Microwell Tests
Veratox and Veratox MAX are quantitative ELISA tests that compare up to 19 samples at a time against test controls. Through the use of a microwell reader, the tests provide accurate sample results in parts per million (ppm) or parts per billion (ppb).

Immunoaffinity Columns
The NeoColumn™ range offers an efficient way to clean and concentrate mycotoxins prior to analysis by ELISA or HPLC methods.

Contract Laboratory Services
Whether it is to validate new matrices, verify in-house results, or the need for an external testing partner, Neogen’s laboratory services for natural toxins are available for the analysis of a wide variety of matrices using ELISA and PCR methods, with flexible turnaround times.

In addition to mycotoxin test kits, Neogen also provides mycotoxin reference material (MRM) and proficiency testing programmes that allow customers to evaluate and validate their mycotoxin testing procedures.

Reveal® Q+ MAX

The Reveal® Q+ MAX product line features a common water based extraction that enables users to test for multiple mycotoxins from the same prepared sample. The ability to test for up to six mycotoxins represents a potentially significant cost and time saving for grain testers. The elimination of hazardous solvents in the extraction process offers a better choice for employees and the environment. Coupled with the AccuScan® line of readers, the Reveal Q+ MAX system objectively reads, analyzes and stores test results.

Reveal Q+ MAX is a competitive, single step lateral flow immunochromatographic assay. Sample extract is wicked through the reagent pad onto the test strip, which contains specific antibodies for the toxin. These kits produce both a test line and a control line depending on the amount of toxin present in the sample. The test line intensity is greatest when there is no toxin present, and the line intensity decreases with increasing amounts of toxin. The control line should always be present, which ensures the kit is functioning correctly. These quantitative test kits provide results in ppm or ppb when read on an AccuScan reader.

About us

Company details

Founded in 1982, Neogen Corporation (NASDAQ: NEOG) now operates out of multiple U.S. and international locations, and has a worldwide presence. Neogen develops, manufactures and markets a diverse line of products dedicated to food and animal safety.

Food Safety Division
Neogen’s Food Safety Division is primarily engaged in the production and marketing of diagnostic test kits and complementary products to food and feed producers and processors to detect dangerous and/or unintended substances in food and animal feed, such as foodborne pathogens, spoilage organisms, natural toxins, food allergens, genetic modifications, meat speciation, drug residues, pesticide residues and general sanitation/hygiene concerns.

Neogen’s test kits are used to detect potential hazards in food and animal feed by testers ranging from small local grain elevators to the largest, best-known food and feed processors in the world, and numerous regulatory agencies. Neogen’s products include tests for:

Grain producers and processors of all types and sizes use the company’s Veratox®, Agri-Screen®, Reveal®, Reveal Q+ and Reveal Q+ MAX tests to detect the presence of mycotoxins, including aflatoxin, deoxynivalenol, fumonisin, ochratoxin, zearalenone and T-2/HT-2 toxin, to help ensure product safety and quality in food and animal feed.

Food allergens
The world’s largest producers of cookies, crackers, candy, ice cream and many other processed foods use the company’s Veratox, Alert®, Reveal, Reveal 3-D and BioKits testing products for food allergens to help protect their food-allergic customers from the inadvertent contamination of products with food allergens, such as peanut, milk, egg, almond, gliadin (gluten), soy and hazelnut residues.

Dairy antibiotics
Dairies are the primary users of Neogen’s BetaStar® Advanced, BetaStar Combo, and BetaStar 4D diagnostic tests to detect the presence of beta-lactam and tetracycline antibiotics in milk. The presence of these drugs in milk is a public health hazard and an economic risk to processors as it limits the milk’s further processing.

Foodborne pathogens
Meat and poultry processors, seafood processors, fruit and vegetable producers and many other market segments are the primary users of Neogen’s ANSR® and Reveal tests for foodborne bacteria, including E. coli O157:H7, Salmonella, Listeria and Campylobacter. Neogen’s ANSR pathogen detection system is an isothermal amplification reaction test method which exponentially amplifies the DNA of any bacteria present in food and environmental samples to detectable levels in as little as 10 minutes. Combined with ANSR’s single enrichment step, Neogen’s pathogen detection method provides DNA-definitive results in a fraction of the time of other detection methods. Reveal’s lateral flow device combines an immunoassay with chromatography for a rapid and accurate one-step result.

Spoilage microorganisms
Neogen’s Soleris® and BioLumix® products are used by food processors to identify the presence of spoilage organisms (e.g., yeast and mould) and other microbiological contamination in food. The systems measure microbial growth by monitoring biochemical reactions that generate a colour change in the media as microorganisms grow. The sensitivity of the system allows detection in a fraction of the time needed for traditional methods, with less labour and handling time.

Sanitation/hygiene monitoring
Neogen manufactures and markets its AccuPoint® Advanced rapid sanitation/hygiene test for adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a chemical found in all living cells. This easy-to-use and inexpensive test uses bioluminescence to quickly determine if a contact surface has been completely sanitized. When ATP comes into contact with the reagents contained in the test device, a reaction takes place that produces light. More light is indicative of higher levels of ATP and a need for more thorough cleaning. The company’s worldwide customer base for its ATP sanitation testing products includes food and beverage processors, the food service and healthcare industries, as well as many other users.

Dehydrated culture media
Neogen Culture Media products offer dehydrated culture media for varied purposes, including traditional bacterial testing and the growth of beneficial bacteria, such as cultures for sausages and beer. The company’s customers for dehydrated culture media also include commercial and research laboratories and producers of pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and veterinary vaccines.

Seafood contaminants
Neogen’s specialty products for the seafood market include tests for histamine, a highly allergenic substance that occurs when certain species of fish begin to decay; chloramphenicol, a banned antibiotic in most of the world, but still used by some shrimp farmers to improve the yield of their products; sulphite, an effective but potentially allergenic shrimp preservative; and shellfish toxins.

Animal Safety Division
Neogen’s Animal Safety Division is primarily engaged in the development, manufacture and marketing of veterinary instruments, pharmaceuticals, vaccines, topicals, diagnostic products, a full suite of agricultural biosecurity products, such as rodenticides, cleaners, disinfectants and insecticides and genomics services.
