Demonstration of Kinarm Standard Tests

We will be demonstrating Kinarm Standard Tests, our suite of standardized assessment tests with normative data and analysis.   Attendees are encouraged to use our interactive robotic platform, the Kinarm End-Point Lab. 

Kinarm Standard Tests provide sensitive and objective measures of sensory, motor, and cognitive brain function through the precise measurement of human behaviour – a method we call behaviourography.  They were developed by neuroscientists for use in clinical research and are now in use in over two dozen different neuro and non-neuro indications.    By using this suite of standardized protocols, a clinical researcher can conduct a broad-based assessment of brain function in a short period of time (30 to 60 min, depending on the tasks selected and the severity of a subject’s impairment).  The precision of KST provides precise biomarkers of brain function that are essential for the validation of new therapies to treat and manage brain injury and disease.

Each Kinarm Standard Test is composed of a Standard Task and its associated Task Report. Each Standard Task is grounded in the principles of neuroscience and is designed to assess functional impairments caused by brain injury or disease. Tasks engage different aspects of the subject’s sensory, motor and cognitive systems in interactive and sometimes highly demanding behaviours.  Each behaviour is generated by neural processing across many brain regions and each brain region participates
in a range of behavioural tasks. The integration across a range of different tasks helps separate different brain regions or circuits to identify the specific functions or brain regions that may be impacted by disease or injury. Some of these tasks have been correlated anatomically.

Each task is specifically designed to have simple instructions and be short in duration. The analysis produces parameters that: demonstrate face validity; are repeatable and responsive; provide continuous measurements; and minimize floor and ceiling effects. 

All tasks developed to-date, were originally developed for adults. In Dexterit-E, Task Protocols for adults are available as a standard option; child versions of the protocols have been added recently and are now included as standard as well. Normative models have been developed for ages 18 - 85 years old for the adult protocols. 

Kinarm Standard Tests are currently in use in over 26 different neuro and non-neuro indications, including: stroke, TIA, TBI, concussion, ALS, Alzheimer’s, MS and Parkinson’s.
