UK HealthTech Industry Looks Forward to Reuniting at MEDICA 2021

The UK health technology industry is looking forward to reuniting at the world’s leading international trade fair for the medical sector, MEDICA 2021 – the first live edition to take place since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

World’s first handheld, non-contacting optical pachymeter showcased at MEDICA 2021

Occuity – a UK-based medical technology start-up producing handheld non-contacting optical instruments for use in healthcare, diagnostics, and monitoring – will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2021 (15 – 18 November 2021) to showcase the world’s first handheld, non-contacting optical pachymeter.

Founded in 2019, Occuity has developed and patented its contactless optical technology to obtain precise measurements from the eye. The company’s vision is to use the eye as a window into the health of the body and to utilise their non-invasive, non-contact handheld technology to bring a range of new medical devices to market which use this technology for ophthalmic examinations, diabetes management, pre-diabetes screening and, in the longer term, the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

The first of Occuity's revolutionary handheld optical ophthalmic devices, the PM1 Pachymeter is aimed at the optometry market and designed to measure corneal thickness with micrometre level precision in just a few seconds. The pioneering technology has been developed to allow both clinicians and technicians to take central corneal thickness measurements - used to support glaucoma diagnosis - quickly and easily.

The device uses an optical technique which means it is completely non-contacting which is unique in a handheld device and in contrast to existing invasive ultrasound pachymeters, which must directly contact a patient's eye. Because the PM1 never touches the eye, it removes the potential risk of spreading infections and accidental damage to the cornea, while also enhancing COVID-19 safety.

Visitors at MEDICA 2021 will be able to see the ground-breaking technology being showcased for the first time on the ABHI UK Pavilion.

In-house, testing shows the Occuity PM1 will be capable of delivering reliable, repeatable measurement with accuracy typically within +/- 5 microns.

In addition, the PM1's non-contact capabilities make it totally pain-free for customers, while limiting the risk of infection, and ensuring there is no need to anaesthetise the eye. The revolutionary device presents the world’s first handheld, non-contacting optical pachymeter.

Revolutionary non-invasive technology supporting early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease showcased at MEDICA 2021

Manus Neurodynamica Limited (“Manus”), who develop and market products and technologies for neuromotor assessment, will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2021 (15 – 18 November 2021) to launch their revolutionary non-invasive technology that supports an earlier and more accurate diagnosis of dementias and cognitive impairment.

The NeuroMotor Pen (NMP) is a unique, patented and CE-marked system which combines multiple sensors built into a digital pen with software for administering standardised tasks and a cloud-based analytical engine with a decision support system. The device enables users to record non-invasively and analyse parameters of minute limb and hand motion, enabling quantification of fine motor skill. These parameters are used as ‘digital biomarkers’ to provide objective information to clinicians about movement abnormalities, thus supporting diagnosis and monitoring of Parkinson's Disease and other neuromotor impairments.

As a monitoring (symptoms tracking) tool, the NeuroMotor Pen provides objective and accurate measurements with automated record keeping. The improved accuracy over other solutions provides advantages – in particular for measuring response to dopaminergic medication. There are currently no other devices on the market that can measure fine motor skill with the same level of accuracy.

Clinical trials and over 10 years of research have demonstrated that the NeuroMotor Pen detects these early signs with high accuracy of over 80% and high sensitivity. Manus Neurodynamica Ltd is also trialing future product versions for assessment of extrapyramidal adverse effects of antipsychotic drugs that has the potential to optimize treatment and reduce side effects. In addition, a product is in development that combines cognitive assessment with motorskill assessment with applications in early detection of dementia. Only around 68% of over 65’s estimated to have dementia have been diagnosed. Early identification is recocognised as substantially increasing the chance of maintaining functional abilities and deferring the point of escalation, where additional care and support is required at home or in a care facility.New screening technologies are required to correctly identify affected patients.

Pioneering prostate biopsy device showcased at MEDICA 2021

UK manufacturer JEB Technologies Ltd, a specialist product development company for the medical device industry, will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2021 on the (15 – 18 November 2021) to  introduce  a novel device designed to facilitate  the taking of prostate biopsies.  

The CamPROBE device (Cambridge Prostate Biopsy Device) aims to provide a simple and low-cost alternative to the current  methods for acquiring prostate tissue to confirm or exclude a diagnosis prostate cancer.   The device is intended to facilitate transperineal prostate biopsies under local anaesthetic.

The transrectal biopsy route (the current most common method for prostate biopsies) can carry a significant risk of infections and severe sepsis as during the transrectal approach the needle has to traverses the bowel a number of times on the way to the prostate.

CamPROBE ,however, facilitates  biopsies through the more sterile perineal skin (transperineal) under the gentials using simultaneous local anaesthetic delivery through an integrated needle. system It is an alternative to transrectal and other current transperineal devices and only needs two body entry puncture points, resulting in low pain scores, enhanced patient comfort and patient acceptability, Initial indications are that  cancer detection ability is equivalent to other biopsy methods based on a multicenter clinical trial. Access through the perineum virtually eliminates the risks of infection and sepsis, compared to transrectal procedures.

The CamPROBE device (Cambridge Prostate Biopsy Device) is a surgically invasive, transient, single use, sterile device consisting of a stainless steel cannula and an integrated coaxial needle.

 

The CamPROBE is inserted at 2 points on either side of the perineum mid-line.  It is then advanced to the prostate with simultaneous targeted local anaesthetic infiltration to deeper structures (including pelvic muscles) using the integrated delivery needle and under transrectal ultrasound guidance. Once in position, the delivery needle is removed and the CamPROBE cannula can be used as an access sheath for prostate biopsies. The CamPROBE can be angled or re-positioned to reach different areas without superficial or deep structure re-puncture.

With over 2 million biopsies occurring each year in Europe and North America[1], the device intends to revolutionise current practice.

When trauma to the skin occurs, large portions of the surface of the skin (epidermis) and its deeper layers (dermis) are destroyed. PolyNovo’s novel BTM technology – a revolutionary biodegradable temporizing matrix – is designed to temporarily close the wound and aid the body in generating new tissue. It works by compartmentalising a large wound into a series of interconnected microwounds, thus making it easier for the body to heal.

BTM can be utilised for full thickness and deep dermal wounds including traumatic injuries, burns, necrotising soft tissue infections and chronic wounds. It enables the generation of a vascularised neodermis which provides a more robust foundation for wound reconstruction than grafting alone. The device is also designed to limit wound scarring and contracture, providing an alternative option to lengthy, complex free-flap surgery. In addition, the technology is uniquely comprised of synthetic material, thus it does not contain any food for bacteria and has shown to be robust in the presence of infection.
