Personalized medicines from the pharmaceutical printer

Medical treatments show the highest therapeutic success when they are precisely tailored to the individual. This is because factors such as body weight, gender and genetics can influence the effectiveness of drugs. DiHeSys, based in Ulm, Germany, has therefore made it its mission to enable tailor-made therapies
The focus is on the individualized production of printed drugs - always with the exact amount and composition of active ingredient required by the patient. Together with Harro Höfliger, the company developed the FlexDosePrinter for the production of personalized thin films and tablets.

When producing the thin films (Oral Dispersible Films), the print heads print a placebo carrier with a clearly defined amount of active ingredient solution. A heating plate inside the FlexDosePrinter then ensures that the solvent evaporates and the active ingredient remains

The basis of 3D printing is formed by well-tolerated polymer filaments with embedded active ingredient. This material can be used to produce personalized tablets in the FlexDosePrinter. Since only a few excipients are required, drugs with larger quantities of active ingredient can also be produced in this way. Printing in several layers makes it possible to combine different active ingredients in one tablet. In addition, an individual release profile can be implemented

With the FlexDosePrinter, pharmacists and clinicians could produce personalized medications directly at the patient in the future. DiHeSys provides comprehensive support to users: from the formulation development of inks containing active ingredients to the provision of printers and the supply of cartridges and consumables

About us

Company portrait

DiHeSys - Digital Health Systems GmbH is an innovative, digital healthcare provider.

We develop and manufacture information and process technology systems to provide patients with access to personalized medicines.

With our products and services we optimize the health care of patients in all areas (prevention, diagnostics, treatment and therapy success).
We see a megatrend towards personalized medicine and the trend that patients want to take more and more responsibility for their personal health. Standard processes at doctors, pharmacies, wholesalers, the pharmaceutical industry and health insurance companies are increasingly being carried out, stored and evaluated digitally.

In the future, this data will also be usable for the individual patient for prevention, diagnostics, treatment and rehabilitation due to the development of digital processes and ever faster data processing. In the future, the enlightened patient will use digital information and platforms such as gamification to get involved in the prevention and treatment of his or her personal state of health and drive individualization in his or her own interests. Things like smartphones, wearables, digital printing, but also, for example, bonus programs from health insurance companies will further promote this

Digitalization in the healthcare sector is taking place more slowly than in other areas. But the aging of our society, the demand for higher quality and drug safety, faster access to health care, increasing adherence while lowering health care costs and reducing unwanted side effects will accelerate it.
