MEDICA 2022 - the world's leading medical trade fair - has once again proven its prominence as the top-drawer trade event for UK life science innovators who are export-ready and looking to grow.

This year the Department for International Trade (DIT) joined forces with DIT Scotland, DIT Ireland, Welsh Government and UK Trade Associations, including the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI), GAMBICA and Medilink, to help increase the visibility of UK companies at the four-day exhibition.

A joint DIT & ABHI UK Pavilion stand provided a unique opportunity for innovators to join UK Government in showcasing the strengths of UK HealthTech and innovation on the international stage. UK exhibitors were also able to meet with DIT experts to promote their business and access bespoke 1-2-1 advice to help explore their global potential.

In total 268 meetings took place, with attendees commending the quality of support to help them raise their profile and make valuable contacts. Nine UK companies also joined the DIT delegation, and held over 55 meetings with non-UK companies that have so far resulted in 17 new international business leads.

The portfolio of innovations presented by UK companies ranged from a sustainable, non-invasive device for continuous blood glucose monitoring, a ground-breaking technology to revolutionise the neuromotor disease diagnostic and monitoring pathways, and a range of pioneering diagnostics, devices and digital health technologies for key areas such as critical care, orthopaedics, clinical training, and surgery.

The Department for International Trade, and its MedTech and genomics specialist, Dr Neil Ebenezer, also took to the stage to present on a number of important topics, including the Potential Future UK MedTech Regulatory Framework, the UK MedTech Landscape and changes to IP since the end of the Brexit transition period.

New to 2022 was the UK Presentation Theatre, delivered in partnership with law firm Sidley Austin LLP and Welsh Government. The dedicated area, which ran throughout the entire show, played host to a series of interactive demonstrations and presentations across all four days, drawing sizeable crowds and offering companies greater opportunities to showcase their products and attract new global investment.

Over 81,000 visitors from various sectors of the global healthcare industry came to Düsseldorf, Germany, to attend MEDICA 2022 and COMPAMED 2022 from 14 - 17 November 2022, which included over 5,000 exhibitors from 70 nations.

This year’s event saw a significant increase in bookings on the part of the exhibiting companies alongside a marked increase in the number of trade visitors, showcasing the show’s continuing international appeal – and underpinning its position as the biggest innovation hotspot in the healthcare sector.

Given the disruption to international travel in recent years, the show once again proved its significance and value in facilitating meetings with global partners, including potential buyers and investors – many of which have resulted in new international business leads and sales.

Stowood, a specialist diagnostic company specialising in sleep disorders will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2022 to showcase their sleep recorder products and launch their new software, Visi-Download 2.

This exciting development is the newest development of the ‘gold standard’ Visi-Download software. It is designed for the analysis and reporting of sleep studies, overnight oximetry studies and overnight capnography studies. A UK company, who specialises in the development and manufacture of ‘zero pressure’ technology will be at MEDICA 2022 to showcase their full range of
pioneering mattress solutions.
 
Over the last few years, Rober has invested heavily in R&D to develop a complete range of pressure ulcer mattresses that cater for a variety of needs including patients that are immobile, bariatric or have existing pressure injuries.

Developed in conjunction with clinicians, the mattresses feature clinically proven technology that prevents pressure injuries from developing. They also have
therapeutic properties that promote the healing of established ulcers.

The mattresses are fully automatic, and patients nursed upon them require less frequent manual repositioning, thus relieving the pressure on busy nursing staff.

Speed Plastics, a specialist in high frequency welding, will once again be at MEDICA 2022 to showcase the range of engineering and OEM services they offer healthcare companies.

The engineering company – which has been established for over 25 years – offers bespoke services in high frequency welding and are specialists in fusing materials together through the application of radio frequency.

When trauma to the skin occurs, large portions of the surface of the skin (epidermis) and its deeper layers (dermis) are destroyed.

UK manufacturer Haemoband Surgical – who specialise in the development and supply of colorectal medical devices – will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2022 (14 – 17 November 2022) to showcase their innovative range of band ligation and endoscopic products.

The company’s primary device, the Haemoband-Plus, is the first multi-action, pre-loaded disposable ligator for the treatment of internal haemorrhoids. It was developed by Consultant Surgeon and company Medical Director, Essam Ghareeb.

The technology – being showcased at this year’s MEDICA – has been designed to allow for more accurate application, to reduce treatment times, and all from a single-handed device. Rubber Band Ligation is highly regarded as an efficient and safe treatment for symptomatic 1st -3rd degree haemorrhoids. The procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis and is proven to be straightforward, easy and economical.

 At MEDICA 2022, Haemoband Surgical will also be launching their new HB-SleeveLUX Proctoscope, a single use, self-illuminating and fully disposable proctoscope. The innovative and patented Locking Technology prevents accidental removal of the Proctoscope when in use, thereby eliminating unnecessary patient discomfort. UK manufacturer JEB Technologies Ltd, a specialist product development company for the medical device industry will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2022 to showcase a novel device that is designed to facilitate the taking of prostate biopsies. 

The CamPROBE device (Cambridge Prostate Biopsy Device) aims to provide a simple and low-cost alternative to the current methods for acquiring prostate tissue to subsequently diagnose the presence of prostate cancer. The device is intended to facilitate transperineal prostate biopsies under local anaesthetic.

The transrectal biopsy route (the current and most common method for prostate biopsies) can carry a significant risk of infections and severe sepsis as during the transrectal approach the needle has to traverse the bowel a number of times on the way to the prostate.

CamPROBE however, facilitates biopsies through the more sterile perineal skin (transperineal) under the genitals using simultaneous local anaesthetic delivery through an integrated needle system. It is an alternative to the transrectal approach and to other current transperineal devices and only needs two body entry puncture points, resulting in low pain scores, enhanced patient comfort and patient acceptability. Initial indications are that cancer detection ability is equivalent to other biopsy methods based on a multicenter clinical investigation. Access through the perineum virtually eliminates the risks of infection and sepsis Compared to transrectal procedures.

The CamPROBE device (Cambridge Prostate Biopsy Device) is a surgically invasive, transient, single use, sterile device consisting of a stainless-steel cannula and an integrated coaxial needle , inserted at 2 points on either side of the perineal mid-line.  It is then advanced to the prostate with simultaneous targeted local anaesthetic infiltration to deeper structures (including pelvic muscles) using the integrated delivery needle and under transrectal ultrasound guidance. Once in position, the delivery needle is removed and the CamPROBE cannula can be used as an access sheath for prostate biopsies. The CamPROBE can be angled or re-positioned to reach different areas without superficial or deep structure re-puncture.

With over 2 million biopsies occurring each year in Europe and North America[1], We are very hopeful that CamPROBE will be adopted worldwide to facilitate prostate cancer detection.

The UK’s Department for International Trade has unveiled its extensive programme of activity supporting UK life science businesses to bolster trade partnerships at MEDICA 2022; the world’s largest event for the medical sector.

For the first time ever, there will be a dedicated ‘UK Pavilion Presentation Theatre’ hosted on the UK Pavilion (Hall 16, stand J48) to showcase the strengths of UK life sciences.

Organised by the Department for International Trade (DIT), Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI), and co-sponsored by Welsh Government and law firm Sidley Austin, the theatre will run for the full four days at the show, providing UK companies with an unprecedented platform to demonstrate their innovations to international buyers and forge new partnerships. The platform will offer UK companies a unique platform to showcase their latest innovations to all markets.

Also taking to the stage is the Department for International Trade, and their MedTech and Genomics Specialist, Dr Neil Ebenezer, who will be presenting on a number of key topics including the Potential Future UK MedTech Regulatory Framework, the UK MedTech Landscape and changes to IP since the end of the Brexit transition period.

At this year’s show, the Department for International Trade will also launch its UK international MedTech proposition, showcasing a glimpse into the UK’s capabilities and opportunities across the MedTech sector and articulating its exportable strengths.

This proposition will be used to inform DIT’s global network of the UK’s strengths in key areas such as diagnostics, medical devices and research and innovation, and underlining the UK’s position as a world-class life science powerhouse. 

UK life science companies at the exhibition are also invited to meet with DIT Commercial Officers and Key Buyers from the UK’s biggest export markets.

These meetings will take place virtually the week before MEDICA for any Commercial Officers not able to attend in person, as well in person on the joint ABHI & DIT Stand throughout the exhibition.

UK companies will have the opportunity to select, meet with and showcase their business to experts for bespoke 1-2-1 advice to help explore their global potential. The platform for booking 1:1 meetings with Department for International Trade (DIT) market experts is now live.

UK-based GlucoRx are joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2022 to showcase the world’s first multi-sensor non-invasive continuous glucose monitor (CGM), heralding a new era of needle-free monitoring for people with diabetes. 

The GlucoRx BioXensor™ uses patented radio frequency technology alongside a multiple sensor approach to measure blood glucose levels every minute reliably, accurately, and non-invasively.  

According to the World Health Organization, approximately 422 million people around the globe have diabetes. Currently, many patients have to prick their finger to extract and test their blood several times a day using glucometers, or apply semi-invasive devices such as continuous blood glucose monitors (CGMs).

Following a series of successful trials on early generation prototypes which achieved MARD of 10.4% at Swansea University with Professor Stephen Luzio, the team is now said to conduct a further pivotal clinical study later this year on its smaller and improved fourth generation device before submitting CE certification.

UK medical equipment manufacturer Adam,Rouilly will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at MEDICA 2022 (14 – 17 November 2022) to showcase their new innovative range of medical training models to support healthcare professionals perfect all manner of essential clinical and nursing skills.

The company – who supply a comprehensive range of pioneering Anatomical Models, Anatomical Charts and Clinical Skills Simulators – will be showcasing some of their latest products, including the pioneering GlucoHand® Glucometer Simulator.

The device has been developed in collaboration with Nina Godson, Senior Lecturer & Lead for Clinical Skills at Coventry University, to aid understanding and teaching of blood sampling and the interpretation of glucose level data and its implications in patient treatment planning.

Also being showcased is the Cricoid Pressure Trainer®, developed in collaboration with Consultant Anaesthetist Dr Osman Abdelatti, to help facilitate training in the application of the correct amount of cricoid pressure, which is routinely used during emergency and obstetric anaesthesia and ventilation. 

A full colour digital display offers instant visualisation of the degree of cricoid pressure being applied. Feedback about how the procedure and how long the correct cricoid pressure was held is presented in a graph at the end of the session - allowing for instant discussion and debriefing. 

In addition, Adam,Rouilly will be presenting their Rectal Examination Model which has been improved in collaboration with the Spinal Injuries Association to offer additional functionality making the model more versatile and lifelike. The model now provides training in stool assessment, general rectal examination and examination of an abnormality, manual stool extraction as well as enema training and insertion of liquid rectal medication.

About 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, and effective diabetes management is now a growing part of the general skills which all clinicians must possess.

Adam,Rouilly’s GlucoHand® model features a simulated glucometer device which can be pre-set by the trainer to give a low, normal, high or completely randomised blood glucose reading – allowing control for training or simulation scenarios. It also includes a realistic adult sized hand, with two refillable finger pads in the middle and ring fingers containing mock blood. Once a sample of mock blood has been successfully obtained from the fingertip and placed on the test strip, the glucometer will display the predetermined reading which must then be interpreted by the student. The model provides a cost effective and complete training solution for all aspects of blood glucose sampling for medical students, care givers and even patient education.

Studies have also shown that 95% of clinicians were unable to identify the correct amount of force required to occlude the oesophagus and that 87% were incapable of applying the correct amount of force. The Cricoid Pressure Trainer aims to significantly enhance training utilising the device’s realistic anatomical structures and instantaneous electronic feedback.

Digital health and social care agency Healthcare Innovation Consortium (HIC) – who champion innovators in the HealthTech community – will be joining the ABHI UK Pavilion at this year’s MEDICA trade fair (14 – 17 November 2022) to launch their exciting new health-focused accelerator programme helping international technology innovators grow in the UK.

Healthcare Innovation Consortium (HIC) will be opening the doors to international technology innovators to apply for their new International Accelerator Programme (IAP) in October 2022. The 12-month structured programme will begin in March 2023 and will take IAP innovators on a journey that includes a tailored route to the UK market, testing and positioning IAP innovators products and services to succeed and the ability to register their company through HIC.

As part of the 12-month programme, IAP innovators will be welcomed to a UK on-site two-day bootcamp, to not only learn from NHS organisations and third-sector providers about the UK market landscape, regulatory requirements, procurement frameworks and processes, but to also receive pitch training from dedicated subject matter experts. Suppliers will then pitch to a panel of healthcare/NHS provider organisations with the end goal being to secure a Proof of Concept (PoC) to implement their technology in the UK. The 12-month programme will intend to conclude successful UK implementation and the opportunity to showcase success sought at the renowned EXPO conference.
